Welcome to mapua

Working together for optimal health

We offer a comprehensive general practice service to the local area, which includes Mapua, Ruby Bay, Upper Moutere, Tasman and the coastal highway to Appleby, as well as to patients who live outside the area and choose to travel to Mapua.

Our aim is to work alongside each individual to achieve their best possible health and well-being. We have a great team of skilled and experienced staff working in a well-equipped, caring and friendly environment.

The practice has achieved the Cornerstone national certification of excellence.

Getting an appointment

Consultations are by appointment although urgent problems can be seen as needed. Each appointment is normally for 15 minutes and we appreciate a phone call if you are going to be late or need to change the time. If appointments are not kept without letting us know in reasonable time to re-book them, a fee may be charged. We will also endeavour to contact you if we are running late due to accidents and emergency cases.

When booking appointments, you will be asked if you are experiencing any flu or cold-like symptoms. If that is the case, you will be asked to stay in your car and park in the back car park to wait for a clinician to collect you. This is to bypass the waiting room in order to minimise spread of infection to patients and staff.

It is very helpful if you can say whether your appointment is or a particular need such as ACC, ante-natal, insurance medical, contraception, complementary medicine, acupuncture etc so they can be fitted in appropriately. If you think you may need more time please ask for a longer appointment.

Doctors - including Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays

After-hours calls are initially put though to a nursing triage service that can give medical advice and there is a free 24 hour telephone health advice at Healthline, 0800 611 116. There is also the Medical and Injury Centre at 96 Waimea Road, Nelson, which is open 7 days a week from 8am to 10pm, phone 03 546 8881. If there is a medical emergency and delay in reaching the duty doctor, phone 111.

Home visits and urgent call outs are normally restricted to patients who live in the Mapua and Moutere districts. Those living in other areas may need to consider contacting the local medical service in that area or attend the Medical and Injury Centre. Emergencies can go directly to the Accident and Emergency department at Nelson hospital.

Appointments

We aim to provide appointments with the doctor of your choice in as timely manner as possible. In urgent situations we cannot guarantee being able to see a specific doctor as it depends on who has available appointment space.

It is worth noting that our usual appointment time is 15 minutes. If you think you will need more time due to the nature of your visit please let us know when booking. If keeping on time is especially important for you we suggest you book an appointment at the start of a morning or afternoon session.

We are aware that there can sometimes be delays from arriving at the health centre and being called in to see the doctor. These usually relate to unexpected emergencies or other complex medical situations. Where possible we try to contact you to let you know there could be a delay. If you have a tight schedule it can be helpful to phone in advance to check that we are running on time. We appreciate patients’ punctuality to keep things running on schedule.

If you have any questions or comments about appointments please talk to our practice manager.
